Research to benefit the World

Located at the Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Centre site will be the primary clinical trials site in Australia for the global Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research; headquartered in New York. The Joint Austin/ Ludwig Oncology Unit was established at the Austin Hopistal, where the future Cancer Centre will be located, with the philosophy that new cancer treatments are essential if we are to make progress in delivering the best care to people with cancer.

The aim of the unit is simple: to provide the very best care to cancer patients and to conduct high quality clinical cancer research in an integrated environment. The new Cancer Centre will be where research and patient care meet, providing a focus for the programs to improve medical treatments and create cancer vaccines.

The Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research (LICR) is an international organisation dedicated to the understanding and control of cancer. The Melbourne Branch operates over two campuses. The main focus for the Institute's clinical activities in Australia is at Austin Hospital, and will move to the new Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Centre upon completion to enhance and build upon their clinical trial programs in search of cures for all types of cancers.

The Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Centre will be responsible for providing the very latest medical care and the LICR will be responsible for providing international clinical research opportunities with highly targetted programs - from the lab to the bedside - with faster results and better collaboration to find more effective cancer treatments such as:

  • new anti-cancer drugs
  • new radiotherapy approaches
  • treatment of blood disorders such as leukaemia
  • stimulating the immune system against cancer and more...
