Dannii Minogue takes on new role for cancer and wellness

Dannii Minogue said she fulfilled a lifetime’s dream meeting her childhood idol Olivia Newton-John, who was her inspiration for getting into show business. The pair bonded when Dannii joined Olivia’s Great Walk cancer fundraiser in April 2008.Inspired by Olivia’s cause, Dannii has accepted the star’s invitation to work with her as an Ambassador for the Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Centre Appeal.

A judge on TV show Australia’s Got Talent, Ms Minogue said, “This role as Ambassador to Olivia’s Appeal is a great opportunity for me to help a very important cause close to my heart.

“After having seen my sister go through cancer and then losing my best friend to the disease, I realise that we need to make changes to the way this disease is treated - and fast.”

Ms Minogue recently visited with patients in the Austin Hospital Cancer Services that will be replaced by the new Cancer and Wellness Centre, and saw first hand the urgent need for a modern cancer centre.

“I am a big believer in Olivia’s concept for the future Cancer and Wellness Centre,” she said. “The right environment with the right support can go a long way in helping people cope better with cancer, as they undergo their often challenging medical treatment.”

Ms Minogue said she was impressed that the new centre would focus on wellness and the clinical care and that the global research would foster a collaborative, sharing approach to help further cancer research and patient care. “The vision is that this new centre will be a great model for the future of cancer treatment - with a new approach to treating the disease.”

Ms Newton-John said she was thrilled that Ms Minogue accepted the Ambassador role. “Dannii has such a big heart and a real personal understanding of the need to provide support for the whole person during their cancer journey. She really grasped our concept of the Cancer and Wellness Centre and I am thrilled she has accepted this Ambassador role to continue helping the Appeal.

The Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Centre will serve as a model for the future treatment of cancer - with wellness therapies and support services alongside patient-centred care, medical treatment and international research of all types of cancer. It will provide therapies not available anywhere else in Australia.
